Dreamers and Realists

Last night I received an email from my brother and sister-in-law. It was a quote from one of my favorite TV shows {Modern Family} The quote read....
"There are dreamers and there are realists in this world. You'd think the dreamers would find the dreamers and the realists would find the realists...but more often than not the opposite is true. You see, the dreamers need the realists to keep them from soaring too close to the sun...and the realists, well, without the dreamers...they might never get off the ground."
This got me thinking about these dreamers and realists. Now, if you've read my blog at all, you've figured out that I'm very much a dreamer. I love being a dreamer...always believing anything is possible. The problem is, people who are dreamers, we don't always think through things. I'm someone you might call irrational at times...even impulsive. While my imagination may take me to some profound place...the reality of it all might not be quite possible.

This is where these realists come in. Realists are the people you recognize as being...well...realistic. They tend to err on the side of caution, making sure that their actions won't cause any unnecessary consequences. Us dreamer, we think...what consequences? If I can dream it, it can happen, right?

After thinking more into this, I began to see how true this was about my relationship. I, being the dreamer...and Andrew, being the realist. We both have important roles that we bring into our relationship. You would think that a dreamer would find a dreamer and a realist would find a realist...but Phil Dunphy couldn't have said it better. We need each other to balance each other out.

I've come to realize you may not always understand or relate to why a person is the way they are, but you can learn to compromise and find a happy medium. After all, relationships are all about balancing each other out and equally coming to an agreement....even if you have to be a little flexible.

Because without each other...you'd be "soaring too close to the sun" or you "might not ever get off the ground....."

What do YOU consider yourself? A dreamer or realist?

  1. I love the John Lennon quote AND the Modern Family quote. Like you, I am very much a dreamer. And like your relationship - my husband is a realist. We definitely balance each other out, and not just on the dreamer/realist front. I guess opposites DO attract!

  2. I'm a dreamer & a realist! I think a 50/50 mix. Ambitious probably would be a good blended word! Ben is definitely a 50/50 mix too but more of a realist I guess. :) I saw you stopped by the blog! Wanted to say hi to a new bloggette! :)

  3. I hear you on being a mix! I think overall we're all a bit of both...but we lean towards one more than the other. And yes, I started following you! Blogging is so much fun! :)
